Settling down in Negombo – taking a rest from your long-distance air travel
Negombo, a charming coastal town in Sri Lanka, offers a blend of natural beauty, colonial history, and vibrant local culture. Here are some top attractions and activities to consider (depending on your arrival time)
Manavari is the first place where Lord Rama installed the Shiva Lingam and prayed after the end of the war with King Ravana. This Lingam is called Ramalingam because it was made by Lord Rama. Apart from this, the Lingam in Rameshwaram is the only Lingam in the world which is named after Lord Rama.
Munneshwaram means the first temple for Lord Shiva (Munnu + Eswaram). Lord Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of Ravana’s vimanas. He felt he was being followed by Bramhaasthi dosham (A malevolent black shadow) as he had killed Ravana who was a Brahmin. When the vimana was passing over Munneshwaram he felt the vimana vibrating and in Munneshwaram realised the Brahmaasthi Dosham was not following him at this particular point. He stops the Vimana at this juncture and asks Lord Shiva for a remedy. Lord Shiva blessed Rama and advised installing and praying for four Lingams at Manaveri, Thiru Koneswaram and Rameshwaram in India, as the only remedy to get rid of the dosham
The Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka, houses the sacred left canine tooth of Gautama Buddha and is a vital pilgrimage site and symbol of Sinhalese pride. Established in the 16th century on the former royal palace complex, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant example of unique Kandyan architecture. The tooth itself is enshrined in a gold casket in a sacred inner chamber, and daily rituals are performed by monks, with a grand procession, the Esala Perahera, held annually
Legend – This site holds two significant associations with the epic Ramayana:
a) It is believed that Lord Hanuman identified the location of Ashoka Vatikawhile landing here.
b) During the great war, the area served as one of Lord Rama’s strategic army camps.
Note – Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka has built a temple with Lord Hanuman as the presiding deity on this hill. On every full moon day special poojas are conducted and witnessed by thousands of devotees. The statue of Lord Hanuman here is carved out of granite and is 16 feet in height

Nuwara Eliya is absolutely beautiful — lush hills, misty tea estates, waterfalls, and cooler weather make it one of Sri Lanka’s gems. Here are quite a few things to do in and around Nuwara Eliya, depending on how adventurous you are, and how much time you have. If you tell me how many days you’ve got, I can suggest an itinerary too.
Quick & Easy Activities in Nuwara Eliya
(Each takes about 30 minutes to 2 hours)
Today’s Sita Amman Temple or Sita Eliya Temple is considered to be a part of Asoka Vanam. This is the temple that holds the ancient idols of Sita Devi, Lord Sri Rama, Lakshmana and Lord Hanuma. There was no record on by whom and when were these idols installed here. Temple around the idols kept on upgraded and polished. A stream behind the temple is considered as the stream where Sita Devi used to bathe. One can also see the footprints of Lord Hanuma here.
This sacred site is believed to be where Sita Devi underwent the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) to prove her purity. After being reunited with Lord Rama following her captivity in Lanka, Sita was overcome with emotion. However, Rama, mindful of his duty as a king, questioned her chastity after her time in Ravana’s abode. Heartbroken yet resolute, Sita asked Lakshmana to prepare a fire, declaring that if she were pure, the flames would not harm her. She then entered the blazing fire, invoking Agni Deva, the god of fire. Emerging unscathed, Sita was presented back to Lord Rama by Agni himself, affirming her purity. Rama revealed that the ordeal was not out of doubt, but to demonstrate Sita’s virtue and integrity before the world.
Ravana Ella waterfall holds significance in the Ramayana legend as a location where King Ravana hid the abducted Princess Sita, with the caves behind the waterfall serving as a hideout during her captivity. A local belief suggests that Ravana’s powerful actions caused the earth to shake, leading to the formation of the waterfall, linking his immense power to the natural landmark. The beauty and isolation of the location are also believed to have been part of Ravana’s lair and a testament to his power, which caused the earth to tremble and create the waterfall itself.
Nestled beneath the famous Ravana Falls, this ancient cave is believed to have been one of King Ravana’s hiding places during his rule in Lanka. According to the Ramayana, it is said that Ravana used this cave to conceal Princess Sita after abducting her from India. The cave, surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic mountain scenery, offers visitors a glimpse into the legendary tale while also showcasing the natural beauty of Ella. A short climb leads to the entrance, where you can imagine the stories of the epic coming to life amid the serene highland setting.
*Note – Climb to the cave: Around 15–20 minutes (moderate uphill walk with steps).
Guests may take time to explore and enjoy the lively tourist town of Ella, depending on the available schedule. |

According to Ramayana, after meeting Sitadevi Lord Hanuman decided to test the strength of the mighty King Ravana and his army of Rakshasas. In the events that unfolded Lord Hanuman’s tail was set on fire by the Rakshasas, who in turn went on to torch some parts of King Ravana’s empire. It is believed that Ussanggoda is one of the torched areas, which is said to have been an airport used by King Ravana. The soil in this area still has the blackened, burned scorched effect as a reminder of Lord Hanuman’s escapade. It is also evident that the soil in the surrounding area is of different color and has plant life.
According to ancient lore, Devinuvara Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Maha Temple is believed to mark the site from where King Sugreeva, the valiant leader of the Vanaras (the monkey army), launched his first offensive against the mighty forces of King Ravana. This sacred location is said to have served as a strategic stronghold during the great battle described in the Ramayana. From here, Sugreeva and his army commenced their heroic campaign, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness (dharma) over evil. Today, Devinuvara stands not only as a revered place of worship to Lord Vishnu—regarded in Sri Lanka as a guardian deity—but also as a site deeply intertwined with the divine chronicles of the Ramayana.
The name Rumasala is believed to originate from two words — “Ruma” and “Massala.” Ruma refers to a historical figure from the Ramayana, the queen of the Vanara Sena and wife of King Sugreeva, while Massala translates to “large rock.” According to legend, this hill is said to be a fragment of the Dronagiri (also known as the Sanjeevani) mountain, which Lord Hanuman carried from the Himalayas to Lanka to save the wounded Lakshmana during the great war. It is believed that portions of this divine mountain fell at five locations across Sri Lanka — Rumasala in Galle, Dolu Kanda in Hiripitiya, Ritigala along the Habarana–Anuradhapura road, Thalladi in Mannar, and Kachchativu in the north — each considered sacred remnants of Hanuman’s legendary flight.
Galle Dutch Fort – A Living Heritage – A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle Dutch Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, blending history, culture, and coastal charm. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch, the fort stands as a remarkable example of colonial architecture and maritime heritage. Visitors can stroll along the ancient ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean, explore narrow cobblestone streets lined with boutique cafés, art galleries, and colonial buildings, and experience the unique blend of European and Sri Lankan influences that make Galle Fort a truly timeless destination.
According to legend, Kelaniya is believed to be the place from where King Vibhishana ruled after being crowned by Prince Lakshmana. As Lord Rama was still in exile during that time and unable to attend the coronation, he entrusted Lakshmana with performing the sacred ceremony. Today, a revered Buddhist temple and a shrine dedicated to King Vibhishana stand at this historic site. Murals outside the Buddhist temple beautifully depict the coronation of the righteous king. Temples dedicated to King Vibhishana can be found across Sri Lanka, where he is honored as one of the island’s four guardian deities. A portrait of King Vibhishana also graces the walls of Sri Lanka’s Parliament, symbolizing his enduring legacy. Interestingly, while no temples are dedicated to King Ravana, the many shrines devoted to Vibhishana reflect how his unwavering commitment to dharma (righteousness) and justice earned him divine reverence in Sri Lanka.
